I usually listen to alternative, but I also listen to songs from musicals, europop(the stuff's like candy; it's so good, but it rots your brain), and some GOOD american pop (80's and 90's).

I went for rock, but I like a little bit of everything you put on the poll, except for rap. It's too preachy for me. I used to not like country when the artists were really whiny. It's still not my favorite. Never could stand heavy metal, because I could never understand what they were screaming about. I did notice the absence of disco, unless it falls into the techno category. But my main favorite is pop. I'm a die hard fan of Amy Grant, both Christian and pop. I guess I just prefer stuff I can understand.

Eh it isn;t really emo. Most of the emo stuff sounds basically the same. MCR has a different kinda sound to it. It isn't as fast and high as the others I guess. I dunno it just sounds different to me or somethin.

Country Music. I love Country Music all of it. Recent artists all the way back to the beginning inthe 1920's. And just to show I mean it, here's a Jukebox I put together.
http://www.geocities.com/texjones2004/index.htm
This how much I love my Country Music. Conway Twitty, Jim Reeves, Ronnie Milsap and George Strait are my favorites.
But I love music in general. Elton John is my idol (for 30 years straight) I saw him here in Dallas back in 1979 and agin in 2002 with Billy Joel in Los Angeles. I love Glenn Miller, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Scott Joplin, Billie Holiday, Diana Ross, Aretha Franklin, Olivia Newton-John, Heart, Boston,Pink Floyd, The Moody Blues, Earth,Wind & Fire, the Osmonds, The Jacksons. I like Toby Keith's "Big Blue Note" and Leann Rhimes "I Probably Wouldn't Be This way". I like Mary J. Blige's recent song. I don't like hip-hop, but I do like the old rap, The Sugarhill Gang, Run-DMC. In my computer, I've collected music from the 18th Century all the way to now, over 3,500 pieces of music in every style except hip-hop

Mostly alternative music. There's so many categories underneath it that 'alternative' becomes a vague term.

The list: The Cure, Nine Inch Nails, My Bloody Valentine, Sonic Youth, Tears for Fears, Prick, Slowdive, Siouxsie & The Banshees, Cocteau Twins, Depeche Mode, KMFDM, Skinny Puppy.

Plus any classical composer. Give me any old symphonies and whatnot, I love it. =)

I like all kinds of stuff, though I'm not at all a fan of rap, country, or jazz [with the exception of anything by Glen Miller, which is more swing than anything].

My favourite genre would probably be black metal, ja. Favourite bands would be Dimmu Borgir, Windir, Nokturnal Mortem, and Carpathian Forest.

2nd to bm is general 90s music be it early or late 90's; rock, metal, or pop; or whether it was popular or not.

Kizzume
17th September 2006, 07:20 PM
I enjoy Jazz, Rock, New Wave, New Age, Fusion, Non-Emo Alternative, Electronic (if it isn't techno/dance), World Music (from all countries, my favorite being middle-eastern), Classic Country, Old Standards, Movie Soundtracks, Classical (and the periods beyond--my favorites being Stravinsky, Mussorgsky, and Debussy) and music that hasn't been made into a category yet. My favorite artists/composers/groups are the ones that either start a new genre or the ones that define or redefine a genre.

I rarely like rap (I espeically hate gangster rap--the reasons are almost endless), I very rarely like New Country (drum machines and voice pitch correction belongs in electronic music, not country, it's too difficult to tell one artist from another in new country, and the lyrics are usually really sappy), I don't like Opera, it's rare for me to like Blues (I just get bored by it), I find speed metal to be really boring (it just starts sounding like white noise after a while), and I don't listen to religious music at all.

My musical tastes definitely influence my own music--I've got a myspace page with a few examples--/kizzume. I'm also in a rock band that should start playing out over the next month and a half, called Mirra.

Indie music does rule. I've been listening to a lot of As Tall As Lions, Mae, and Starlight Mints lately. In fact, I just saw Mae live last night, though whoever was working the sound levels needs a good smack. More than that he needs a Mae CD so he knows what they're supposed to sound like. Still a good show from them, though, I may try to catch them on their tour with OK Go and The Fray this summer.

Happenstance
18th March 2007, 01:47 AM
Screamo gets no love. Seems everyone's reaction is that if they're screaming, it's not really music, it's crap. But some groups, might I reccommend The Fall of Troy and Thursday, and even The Blood Brothers although they're a group I find difficult to listen to, have a lot of cool things going on behind the screaming. The screams stick out at first because they're different, it's a recent development, we're not used to hearing them in music. But if you focus more on the musical end of it, the screams are just another sound that completes a musical picture, like putting very attention-grabbing hand claps in a song.

Sure its music, its just people would rather hear something that isn't going to give them a headache if repeatedly listening too it.

Oh, and I believe Rap isn't music, it's poetry to a beat. Since, you know, they're not actually singing! XD

Understandable, as I for one could care less about the words in a song. I disagree with your statement on rap, however, as there exists music without singing. The rapping is just another sound, and while it is not necessarily musical of its own right, it is put to a rhythm just as disco groups put recorded hand claps to their music, and it does not make it any less of music. It doesn't mean I like it, or that it takes any great skill to create, but still.

So... underground punk and hardcore, eh, Lily? Familiar with The Fall of Troy or Glassjaw?

littlelily
1st April 2007, 02:12 AM
Why yes, Glassjaw are good...I like their sound but...they're a little too famous to be considered underground nowadays...!
My faves at the moment are F'ed up(can't write the real band name on here, but I'm sure you can figure it out) Career Suicide, 9 Shocks Terror, Acid Reflux, Mind Eraser and Cut the Shit....

Happenstance
1st April 2007, 07:32 AM
That's important to you, that an artist be lesser known in order for you to listen to them? A peculiar criterion, and had I followed it I would have given up listening to The Cure and Incubus long ago. I'm glad I didn't.

littlelily
1st April 2007, 02:08 PM
Happenstance, I think you've misunderstood what I meant.

What I was saying is: I generally listen to 'underground' hardcore (i.e. I go to most hardcore shows in the city where I live, so most of the music I like would be considered 'underground' in the sense that the bands aren't that well known.)

In response to your question about glassjaw I simply stated that I thought they where too famous to be considered 'underground' NOT that I disliked them because of that. I in fact said "I like their sound."

So no, underground is not a criteria, but it does describe the vast majority of music that I listen to, because that's what's available to me in the community. There's lots of well known bands that I like too (Infest, Lamb of God, H100s, H20, Wall of Jericho etc.) I just wouln't consider them underground, that's all :D

Didn't mean to offend.

For some reason I've never heard incubus before, what do they sound like?

Happenstance
2nd April 2007, 08:21 AM
Oh, I'm not offended. Takes quite a bit more to offend ol' Hap. And I quite understand what you meant, you were simply ambiguous as to your musical intents before.

Incubus sounds quite a bit like Red Hot Chili Peppers, but it's interesting how that divides societies - there are Incubus people, and there are RHCP people. Incubus has a darker, more subtle sound, RHCP is brighter and more aggressive. I'm an Incubus person, though was tremendously disappointed with their last release which looks an awful lot like they've sold out. If you're curious, check out Morning View and Make Yourself, their mid-life material when they were rising to fame and still had the ingenuity of Dirk Lance's songwriting to their benefit. Specific songs I'd recommend include Consequence, Warning, The Warmth, and Nice to Know You.

And while you said 'I like their sound', you also followed it with a 'but'. Buts speak volumes.

Gad, sir. No "classical" alternative? Kids these days! ;)

I like early and baroque music, and 21st century lyric minimalism. Michael Nyman is my favorite composer. I'm sort of stuck, though--I don't know what music to buy next, because every time I try someone new I'm sharply disappointed. I spent like $25 to import an album by a dutch recorder consort playing contemporary quartets and thought that five of the six pieces were nervewracking. I listen to Nyman and Joby Talbot with greatest appreciation, and enjoyed Tavener's "Praises and Lamentations" more than anything I'd heard by Gorecki, who is next on the list. I think that Philip Glass writes wretched, plastic, useless music. Oh, I like John Adams, but only in certain moods, and as for John Cage, he's hit or miss with me--he either makes me uncomfortable or puts me in a really appealing cognitive place. I just don't know what to think of Gavin Bryars--he's growing on me (I hated "Last Days" at first, but every time I listen to it again I like it more.) My point, though, is that I don't know where to go from here... any suggestions?

BMP - I don't know a great deal of contemporary classical music and I'll admit the only ones on your list I've heard anything by are Nyman and Cage, so perhaps suggesting Eric Whitacre to you could elicit a turning up of the nose but I'm going to do so anyhow. I do enjoy Eric Whitacre a lot and think everyone else should too.

This will be somewhat random... but we just played a song by Eric Whitacre in Symphonic band... it's called October.

However, we'd like to play Godzilla Eats Las Vegas... it's really a song by him!!

I dunno, I don't claim to have eclectic tastes, but among my favorite artists are Björk, Tegan and Sara, M.I.A., Feist, Mirah, Psapp... Right now I'm falling in love with Camille. Her album Le fil has such a clever concept. I love it, even if I can't understand a word of French. <3

Jazz! Jazz! Jazz! Specifically, straight-ahead jazz. Listening a lot to Cannonball Adderley and Milt Jackson at the moment, and Charlie Parker. I like 'showtunes' if you're talking about very early shows by guys like Gershwin but I'm not that interested in a lot of the modern stuff by guys like Sondheim and Andrew Lloyd Webber.

'Classical' (in the broadest sense, rather than the period) from different periods: Purcell, Handel, Bach, Haydn, Mozart, Schubert, Puccini, Stravinsky, Bartok, Prokofiev, Gershwin, Shostakovich, Britten, Bernstein, Bernard Herrmann...

Also really into Stevie Wonder's stuff from the 70s, woohoo! Bjork is cool, Jamiroquai I used to listen to a lot too back in the 'day' when they were still making good albums. Don't really listen to any rock or techno though.

I love music in all different kinds of languages. My favorite would have to be Japanese music xD; . It's just as big a vice as my obvious fetish, except I'm extremely open about music. My favorite types would have to be J-Power/symphonic metal, and some JGoth. I like JRock in general, but those are my favorite sub-genres. I also enjoy listening to techno / electronica, some punkish/alternative stuff (Decemberunderground and MSI count as that?), but I also love classical music . Yah, I said it, I love classical, almost to the point where I wish Bach was my grandfather xD .

Just based on the way the poll is set up I'd go for Alternative. More specifically though I'm into more indie type bands that almost no one's ever heard of. :D

The three most widely known of my favorite bands would be Radiohead, Smashing Pumpkins, and Muse. Other lesser-knowns include Wolf Parade, Sunset Rubdown, Fair to Midland, Arcade Fire, Beirut, The Most Serene Republic, 65daysofstatic, Radical Face, Cloud Cult, Patrick Wolf, Shugo Tokumaru, St. Vincent, and Final Fantasy. (Oh and and I'm not talking about the video game music. Final Fantasy is the stage name for violinist Owen Pallett)

The list: The Cure, Nine Inch Nails, My Bloody Valentine, Sonic Youth, Tears for Fears, Prick, Slowdive, Siouxsie & The Banshees, Cocteau Twins, Depeche Mode, KMFDM, Skinny Puppy.
