Part 1
The beginning of school, it felt like my slate had been washed free, like rain washing a landscape. I was excited, for once, of the new things that were going to happen this year, the new people I was to meet.
My alarm clock blazed, waking me from my sleep. I looked over at the clock and saw the numbers. I groaned.
“Why did I have to sign up for stupid zero hour jazz again…” I grumbled to myself as I slowly got out of bed.
I made my way to the shower where I stood brain dead for fifteen minutes. I was broken from my drowsy stupor from the loud pounding of my sister yelling at me to get out. I counted to ten, savoring the last bit of warmth before I turned it off and got out. I dried, got dressed and was on my way to the door ,however before I managed to get to the door my mom stopped me. I turned around and looked at her loving face.
“C’mon Jake, give your mom a hug before you leave.” She said starting to pull me into one of her “hugs”. A better word (well words, technically) to call it would be a full body embrace. She may not be big, but she can REALLY pull you in.
I finally freed myself from her embrace and made my way to my car going over my schedule in my head. After reviewing it several time I felt a drop of water. “Great, just great” I thought, “it’s gonna rain…” And like as if on que, it began to pour. I quickly got to my car to avoid getting soaked and started my half hour trek to my school, Grant Central High School.
The rain only seemed to be getting harder making my mood slowly worse. I stopped at a light and looked around at the wet outside. Nothing really significant until I spotted a kid walking in the pouring rain. He was pretty big which brought my attention immediately. I scanned him further to confirm that he indeed was a teen. After a few seconds of scanning I saw he was wearing what looked like a high school sweat shirt. I tried to make out the name, it took some effort but I finally made it out to be “Grant Central High School.” Feeling compassionate and slightly hopeful, I decided I would give him a ride to school, or at least offer one.
The light turned green and I continued forward passing him, where I then pulled into a parking lot of a corner store. As he passed my car I rolled down the window and yelled to him.
“Hey! You! You’re looking pretty wet.” I yelled to him lamely.
He stopped and looked over to me and gave me a weird look. He then continued to walk as I hadn’t said anything.
“Well as you are wet, want a ride to school? We just so happen to go to the same place!” I yelled at him again.
He stopped again this time looking like if he was debating whether to take the offer. After a few seconds he walked over to my window.
“Um yeah but how do I know you aren’t lying or anything?” he asked. His voice was a rich and almost natural tone. Very pleasant to the ears.
“Because I have the ID card from last year” I said and pulled it out of my wallet. He seemed to except that and opened the passenger door, heaving his big body in. I looked him over, and I must say he was pretty adorable. He had to weigh at least 250 pounds and be at least six foot. He held the weight pretty well. Rather than looking fat he just looked huge but he still retained a nice belly.
After my short oogling I snapped back into focus and started the car up. I backed out of the space and re-entered traffic. I drove for about 5 minutes in complete awkward silence before I finally mustered up something to start a conversation.
“So,” I started, “I’ve never seen you around school, you new or something?”
He shifted uncomfortably. “No… I went there last year, I just wasn’t very social.” He replied sounding somewhat embarrassed.
“Oh…” I felt awkward now. Had I picked up some socially awkward kid? I drove with worried thoughts going through my head, but finally dispelled them knowing I could very well be wrong.
Silence. Utter silence for what seemed like ages. I was getting really bothered by it but I couldn’t think of anything to say. I was starting to think this wasn’t a good idea when he broke the silence.
“So what instrument do you play?” he asked, pointing at the case in the back seat.
“Um the Alto Saxophone.” I replied feeling a bit awkward and surprised at the question.
“Oh…” he said, “ So are you Max Kraver then?”
I was struck completely off guard, how the hell did he know my name?
He obviously saw my confusion as he let out a hearty laugh.
“Don’t worry dude,” he said though his laughter, “I’m not a stalker. I just know that you were talked about a lot on the announcements last year for your various music competitions and achievements.”
I was relieved almost. By that time we were at school. I drove into the junior parking lot and I let him out. He thanked me for the ride, as it saved him from being completely soaked to the bone. I then continued to find a parking spot thinking about this mystery kid. I realized I never caught his name which made me feel like something out of a bad romance. “He was really cute… Too bad he probably wouldn’t go for a guy,” I thought as I got out. I collected my stuff from the back seat and headed towards the band room feeling somewhat happy, excited, and sad about the start of the first day. Thoughts about the mystery guy plagued my brain as I assembled my sax. I looked around the empty silent room, only hearing the patter of the pouring rain.
