I'd almost say it is an "Urban myth", carbonated soft drinks causing kids to become obese.

However hysterical parents will spread almost any scare story in order to assert protection over their children.

Here also a web link I've found recently, a site about how to gain weight!
Different than these "loose weight" adverts.

I'm pretty sure it's a myth. I don't know if they use the same recipes for drinks all over the world but in the UK a lot of artificial sweeteners are substituted for sugar even in drinks that aren't marketed as low calorie, e.g. Fanta has about 18 calories per 100ml if I remember correctly, which wouldn't contribute to weight gain at all.

I was told by a doctor that 1 soda a day is 24 pounds a year.

Its definitely true in North America
High Fructose Corn Syrup is nasty stuff.

For the rest of the world where sugary drinks still use cane sugar, its not as much as a danger/issue.

As always-- quite knowledgeable...

If YOU were in the "OLD SOUTH", or any where the "Sweet" tea is consumed by the gallons, imagine the intake, along with all the other shit they eat/drink, between "meals". There are also corporate promoters such as KrispyKream --and I've never seen such sugar-coated stuff. Plus, I came down here from the "land of pretzels, bagels and donuts", some might say!!

Tables full of guys "hang out" at the likes of Ryan's, "Golden" this and that, for all-you-can-eat buffets.

One of these "meals" could be equal to over a day-and-half of food, total! The "drinks", unless full evenings of beer with the bros is nothing "much" to add, in this case. :o

I think they put the aspect on the CO2, the stuff that makes these lemonades bubble.

Actually, soda or pop or whatever you call it can be a big part of gaining weight.

For one thing, especially here in the US, when you use compounds like high-fructose corn syrup or artificial sweeteners that your body really can't process, it mucks up your system.

Also, drinking soda or pop can end up being "empty calories." if a person drinks a great deal of pop when they become thirsty, in leiu of water, they end up with a greater number of calories that their body requires. excess calories = gaining weight, unless burned off.

Also, carbonation causes a person to become thirsty again, so they may drink more pop.

The real villian isn't the pop, but the lifestyle. If you drink 4-5 glasses of pop a day, plus full meals, and you aren't active enough to burn the excess calories off, then you're going to gain weight.

Most people just need a scapegoat, and pop provides a good target.

Everything in moderation, people.

mountain dew by itself caused me to gain 30 pounds unintentionally during college....i'm an encourager, not a feeder...i have health conditions that prevent me from gaining weight, so being an individual who is sort of nuetral to the whole soda argument, i can honestly say that in excess, it is a cause of weight increase.

I rarely ever drink water, tap or bottled. for some strange reason it

makes me somewhat sick, so i only drink it when absolutely necessary.

Water is in all beverages somewhere in the mix so it is impossible to NEVER drink any water because you'd die fairly quickly.

One of the best ways to gain is to drink your calories. Especially lately with the substitution of high fructose corn syrup for cane sugar. Much more effective
