Is this true I just saw a blip about it on the news. Honestly to me it's just another oldsmobile, the GTO, and the G8 are there only decent recent cars, except the G8's exterrior just looks cheap and ugly as with most Pontiacs.

Any other car buffs have interest>?

Yeah GM announced that Ponitac is closing it's doors, which to me is a good thing,

I for one believe that GM had far too many brands to begin with next the need to axe

GMC & Saturn

and sell off HUMMER and Saab.

Leave Chevrolet, Buick, and Cadillac

I would leave Buick because they're making a killing in China.
Living in Michigan it's sad to see Chrysler file for Chapter 11, and for GM to do what it has to do, but they've been the dinosaurs of the automotive industry and they need to change to keep up with the japanese and european autos.

I knew the end for Pontiac was near when they came out with the Aztec. That is one of the worst vehicles ever made. Then they started making the cars almost exactly the same as Chevrolets.

Pontiac Torrent = Chevy Equinox
Pontiac G5 = Chevy Cobalt
Pontiac G3 = Chevy Aveo (the hatchback looks like an egg)

Where have you been? Almost all car companies have been doing this for years.

Ford Escort = Mercury Mystique
Ford Taurus = Mercury Sable
Chevy Camaro = Pontiac Trans Am
Chevy Silverago = GMC Sierra
Honda and Acura
Nissan and Infinity
Chrystley, Dodge, and Plymouth

They're almost exactly the same because they are built of the same platform. Hell even Manufacurers under different ownership made cars from the same platform. IE Honda Passport and Izuzu Rodeo and 92-02 Geo Metro and Toyota Corolla.

The comparisons between Domestic American motors cannot be the same as Japanese ones. Japanese Companies like Toyota and Infinity are low end and high end. GMC does not have that.

And the Geo Metro is nothing in comparison to the Corolla... shit lol it's not Hard.

BTW! it's GMC CHEVY CADILLAC AND BUICK.

Pontiac Saturn and Hummer are getting the AXE.
Saab is being sold. seriously i'm canadian and i know my facts about the Detriot big names.

Chrystler is going to be owned by a better company in FIAT.

Are you seriously trying to correct someone who's worked in the automotive industry for several years?

FACT: The model year 1992-2002 Geo Metro sedans and Toyota Corollas are the SAME EXACT CAR. They share parts as well. I've happened to have owned one.

EDIT: I stand corrected on the Metro, it's the Geo Prism.

FACT: BTW! GM (General Motors) is comprised of Chevrolet, Pontiac, Buick, GMC, Saturn, Cadillac, Hummer, and Oldsmobile

FACT: Toyota and Infinity have nothing to do with eachother

FACT: Infinity and Acura are American brands, luxury models of their Nissan and Honda counter parts, BUT STILL BUILT OFF THE SAME PLATFORM.

Oh, and you don't have to be Canadian to be able to read a news article http://www.autoobserver.com/2009/04/good-bye-pontiac-saturn-saab-hummer.html

What does anyone of this have to do with car platforms anyways, do you even know what a car platform is?

Hummer won't get "AXE'd" either, it's too much of a niche market to get rid of. I don't know why I even bother with internet commando's sometimes...

Hummer wont get the axe, saab will be sold to someone else, Saturn may get the axe, and I think GMC should get the axe too (Sierra = Silverado ;) )

FIAT wont to anything for Chrysler, they're reliability will probably stay the same, and all we'll get is the FIAT 500...

ooooo, I wanna add two cents worth..

The Pontiac GTO is a Rebadged Holden MONARO which is MADE in Australia and exported. Pontiac just change the bumper on the front to make it look UGLY!

:D

The Honda Passport and Isuzu Rodeo are also the Holden/Opel/Vauxhall Frontera in SWB and LWB. :D (Isuzu design rebadged)

Expect the Monaro is inherently cooler and Holden made a rediculous supercharged version. IIRC it was something rediculous like 500 tire-roasting horsepower from the factory.

I think you're talking about the HSV GTO, which was roughly 400 horses.

I believe Vauxhall sells a rebadged HSV GTS in the UK, but the real deal products can be found here (http://www.hsv.com.au), for your viewing pleasure.

Yes, HSV sounds about right. Thanks!

Big diff though between the Holden Monaro and the HSV Monaro ;)
The Monaro is out of the factory as Holden designed it, but Holden Special Vehicles (HSV) then go and take that to insane levels, which in my book are brilliant :D

I dislike seeing the Monaro badged as a Vauxhall here :( It makes me want to go up and rip the bloody badge off).. That said I have seen a couple of Monaro's with Holden AND HSV badges, it made me feel a lot better.. and all was well with the world at that time, heheh.

GM just spread themselves way too thin. Sure other brands rebadge their cars, but GM does it with almost every model and there is barely a difference between them. I am happy that it will be Chevy, Buick, GMC, and Cadillac. I can see Buick making a comeback in the near future in the US. But only if GM stops being retarded.

In all honesty, none of this car business crap surprises me... if American auto makers could actually produce something people WANT that isn't crap, then they wouldn't be in this situation!!

The only two automakers from whom I'd buy a car at this point: Honda/Acura or Ford

I sortof agree.

I test drove a 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid and was blown away by the interior quality! the thing was sooo smooth on the road too, if I could afford it I would have purchased it (I have a 80 mile round trip commute in an SUV :( )
I applaud Ford for trying to get it's act together, and for not taking any Government money either! If I were to buy an American made car it would be Ford by a landslide!

-However I'm looking at getting a VW, so eh :P

I think its about time this happened,GM and Chrysler have been making poor quality cars for so long they should have stepped up a long time ago.

The Japanese and Korean's are quite aggressive at improvement, it was bound to happen.

uggh Why Keep Buick? I mean Saturn is probably the best one out of the 7 manufacters and there dumping it? and Pontiac while isnt bad is better then GMC, and they just started selling the G8 which is genually a good car. Why waste all that money?

It's sad about all the brands and jobs being cut. But why did they keep GMC instead of Pontiac? GMC and Chevy trucks SUVs are all the same models, just different brands on them.

We may never know why GM did what it did, all i know is that it's definitely hurting Michigan's economy, we have close to, if not the highest unemployment rate in the country at around 15%

They should have stopped Saturn or Hummer instead of selling both but GMC SUVs are meant to be luxury options... like, there is no Yukon Denali version of the Tahoe/Suburban (but the Z71 comes close). It does seem like Chevy and GMC could have consolidated but that wouldn't have solved anything because I think the vehicles (Tahoe and Yukon; Silverado and Sierra) are made in the same factories but with different nameplates and logos.

It's called badge engineering ;)

Think of the Cevrolet Blazer / GMC Jimmy / Oldsmobile Bravada

they were all the same car, same shell, just different badges and options...
