I've only seen a few but I'm a fan of Dr Horrible's Sing-Along Blog and Scrubs the Musical. I saw the movie version of Rent and liked it too. Haven't seen any Broadway or non-movie musicals though.

Well I LOVE avenue Q!!!!!!! (if you were gay is sooo funny)

lets see....

Chicago on broadway sucked monkey-butt, but its a good movie,
A CHORUS LINE on broadway was AMAZING
I was in Bye Bye Birdie, and thats a decent show, kinda cute.
I saw a production of Anything Goes that was good...

Uhmm as for movies:

Across the Universe,
Sweeney Todd,
Hairspray,
Chicago,
Dr Horrible's Sing-A-Long Blog,
Scrubs: My Musical (season six)
uhmm the classic Disney movies of course!
lets see....

Im sure theres more though... but personally I prefer plays and regular movies most of the time.

I love musicals! My favorites would have to be Singing in the Rain, My Fair Lady, Phantom of the Opera and Hairspray is cool, too. The majority of musicals I like, I can't think of one that I've seen that I've hated.

Okay, well lets see, there is

Tommy (The Movie was good too)
The Producers (Though the original movie was better)

and so many more I can't think of right now.

I have always loved musicals... and very few have been the ones in which I didn't find at least something to like. I know, some of the old chestnuts are pretty jaded now, but there's still the individual work of the performers to watch and enjoy. And some of the newer musicals are so refreshing in their innovative content. But perhaps as a lover of show music, I am a bit prejudiced!

For several years, my theatre subscription series seemed to present nothing but turgid, dreary dramas that either put me to sleep in my seat or left me so down that I would be wondering why I even bothered to go to the show. But now, apparently in response to public demand, they are giving us far more musicals - and very impressive productions of them, too. Yes, I know that everybody has different tastes as to the type of theatre that they prefer. But especially considering the cost of show tickets these days, I personally would far rather come out of a show singing a good tune than leave the theatre totally bummed out by some depressing psychological drama.

well jaybear, I've always argued tragedies are amazing in that they make you see all sides of life in new ways. Take the good with the bad, as it were. Where yes a happy ending is great...life isnt always that way. And that is why The Great Gatsby is one of my fav novels...

I really like the music in Avenue Q, and you can tell which songs in Scrubs were written by the Avenue Q writers.

Also I LOVE the music in Chicago! Oh my its so amazing!!!!

Not a massive musical fan, but there's certainly a few good ones out there.
Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables, Sweeney Todd and Jesus Christ Superstar to name but a few.

Rocky Horror is a good one. Tim Curry makes a good transvestite. Magenta gave me a lap dance last time I went to see it preformed.

Little Shop of Horrors is great, but I can't stand the filmed versions anymore. Not after I saw it preformed live.

There are a few others I like, but for the most part I'm really not that big a fan of musicals.

Ohhh, the South Park movie was good, and that counts as a musical.

I quite agree that tragedies are important to appreciating life's downs as well as its ups... and some of them are amongst the best pieces of theatre ever produced. And I also share your love of Gatsby as a novel. I was more railing against stage shows that delve deeply into the psyches of seemingly disturbed individuals... and while that is fine in book form, it's just not to my very personal taste to watch it on stage.

Nobody (least of all me) says that all theatre should have a happy ending. Life isn't usually that way, so why should every show end happily? Les Miz and Phantom and Evita are anything but happy but at least you can come out with some good music ringing in your head after the show.

Yeah I have to agree with Mike, I cannot stand most musicals. The only kind I can tolerate and actually do enjoy are rock-operas like The Wall, Tommy, Quadrophenia, and you could even count Led Zeppelin's "The Song remains the same".

Ah, I love going to a school with a good drama programme.

We put on a musical every year in an external theatre, and then occasionally a boutique musical at school. Last year we did Pippin and Little Shop that way.

Love love love love love Sweeney Todd.

And I'm amused at seeing Dr. Horrible on here, but it is an amazing production, and I belong to a semi-professional theatre group that is seriously considering staging it next year.

Can't say I'm a fan of musicals...I mean it has to do something spectacular to make me like it.

I'd have to say Blood Brothers stands out above all the others mind you...I stay far away from things like Grease too *shudders*

I love:
-The Producers(both on broadway and the movies)
-Oklahoma
-The Music Man
-42nd Street
-Otello(cus, well it was the first)

-Rent, was ok but 1. I prefer more traditional musicals and 2. I just wasn't a big fan of the premise, oh well. It was still worth watching.

I want to go see Avenue Q and Young Frankenstein live :).

Ummh, I'm sure there are other ones I like/love and others I want to see.

See, I like musicals with less traditional style music... I'm not a huge fan of stereotypical "showtune" type of music...

Avenue Q is fantastic live! I highly reccomend it. Yes there's lots of profanity and such but it actually has great messages too, "Everyone's a Little Bit Racist" for example is a great song...and is very true: "Ethnic jokes might be uncouth, but you laugh because they're based on truth"

I'm not really into them that much. Dr. Horrible is my favorite. My school is putting on one that I'm the comic relief in, so that's fun. I did A Midsummer Night's Dream last semester (I know it's not a musical, but somebody put up plays) and played Lysander. It's lots of fun and, since my school is pretty small, most of my friends do the plays either as actors or tech. But back to the original topic, I tend to pick only a few songs from a musical and really enjoy them.

I like some musicals. Nothing too artsy, I'm afraid. Just the usuals: Shock Treatment, Yentle, 8 femmes, My Fair Lady, The Sound of Music, Hair, etc.

dancer in the dark :)

it will blow your mind away.

If by "blow your mind away" you mean "leave you desolate and cotemplating suicide" then yes, I agree. I love that Peter Stormare finally plays a nice character in it, though. He's so dreamy.

I've only seen three myself: Phantom of the Opera, The Color Purple, and The 25th Annual Spelling Bee.

The Phantom of the Opera...is a unique experience. I'd definately reccomend it. The Color Purple was...good, I guess, but not quite my cup of tea.

But Spelling Bee was pretty awesome, I'd have to say. Very funny. I saw it with my graduating class in high school, and even the non-artsy times thought it was pretty amazing. =)

I take it back, 25th Annual Spelling Bee was really funny but that's the first Broadway musical I've seen that I wasn't groaning at the whole way through. Most of the time I sneak away from the people I'm with and go out for a cigarette lol.
