View Full Version : Google spider

I just found out that the Goolgle spider indexes this forum. That means that people can find me being a member here when they are searching on my nickname:eek:
Okay, [secret_replacement_name] is not my real name... but some people who know me for real DO know about this name... and well... I prefer them not to know about my specific interests regarding bellies:o Maybe more people can have this problem?
So... my question is: is it possible to exclude Google (and other search machines) to index the forum of this page? I found out that it's possible via a robots.txt file (see http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?answer=40364 for more information).
Otherwise: is it somehow possible to change my nickname?
On beforehand a very, very big thank you! :D

Of course its possible, but you need to think about these things before joining the site... Theres no need for us to ban search engine spiders in my opinion, otherwise many of our members who found us through such curiosity would never be here.
If you do want your username changed, just PM our admin, Guts and in almost all circumstances he will be happy to change it for you.

Awfully good point, one of the reasons I keep meaning to change my username....

Same here. I just can't think of something new to use other than this.

While I've already changed a couple of usernames, please note that google's history of past posts won't magically disappear.

True, and while not eradicating it, it does make it a little harder to be tracked.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that once Google's spider comes along again and sees the updated pages with a new username, it will replace the existing one in its cache, at least in so far as the general public can access. I don't think Google keeps its cached pages indefinitely.

It might. I'm not sure. We should try to look into that somehow. But still, Guts is right. But it doesn't matter because like you said, it WOULD update the cache, and change the name on all old posts too. So, in a way, I guess it makes no sense to change your name while at th esame time it does.

Right, i'm going to change mine, same theme, same greek-based-story-line, but new name none the less, and non-linked to my other one.
You'll see ;)

This is gonna be so confusing...

Not entirely, when a name changes on the forum it gets updated on all earlier posts, so nobody will appear as having two names.

And I'm sure the display picture will remind you who is who.

Okay, my old user name is gone... From now, I'm Iwanttobeachubbyboy :) It's a part of the user name I used in the past: iwanttobeachubbyboywithadeepbellybutton. But well... I thought that a little shorter would be nice :)
I'll monitor Google and report to you when the search results on my old username are dissapeard.
Thank you Gut for the quick response!

But you should know that not just google was the point...
Take a look at http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://www.bigguts.com
But anyway I thought a excluding of spiders would be nice, anyway... I allready know that spiders search the web but I get *ooops*ed when I read this... and think about what I told here.

No Exclusion of Spiders. Only people who are desperate to look back (and generally the archive spider will only save the main site and individual forums, not posts) would look at that.

Update on the search results of Google... they are gone!
Well... not really... Google is not stupid: the results only changed... now two other topics are in the results. THIS one... because I gave my old nick name in my first message (stupid... and it seems impossible to edit messages) and the introductions topic, where I was quoted in a message.
Guts... can you please help me one more time, and remove my old username from those 2 posts??? Thank you very much.
