Well obviously I have more than 1 favorite movie, but thinking about films from '03 to now, definitely "11:14". Pure gold. I reccomend it to anyone who enjoys a good, original story.

Oooh, Princess Mononoke. I love Miyazaki's movies.
Grave of the Fireflies made me cry.

Oh, there are so many. I'm with thornman about "11:14", which was a great exercise in intersecting storylines (though not as well-acted as "Crash") and Miyazaki movies (though "Howl's Moving Castle" was a tad slow).

But I'm gonna have to go with "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind," "Lost in Translation", and "Little Miss Sunshine." I realize that I'm breaking the singular favorite rule, but they're all recent movies and show a new direction filmmaking seems to be headed in. They're also definitely films everyone can appreciate, even though at times the former two can be a tad confusing.

And I just saw "The Prestige" and recommend that as well. Christopher Nolan is nuts and totally butchers linear stories, but he's brilliant. Tarantino also cannot be overlooked: "Grindhouse" should be waaay more popular than it is. And "Pulp Fiction" is unadulterated (seriously) awesome. K, I'm way over the limit.

5th May 2007, 07:39 PM
^ Was Grindhouse that good?

I wanted to see it while it was in theatres, but I didn't get a chance... :(

I'll stick it in the Netflix queue or something when it comes out if it is. :P

It was amazing. If you know anything about 70s films, you'll laugh so hard that you'll feel like you're about to pop. I mean, come on. A woman with a gun for a leg, Nicolas Cage with a cameo as a kung fu master, five-time replay of a car getting run over to focus on individual deaths, Bruce Willis as an oozing zombie ... it's perfect. And, honestly, it sounds waaay gory, and it is, but it's hilarious.

And stick around for the end of Tarantino's segment.

Rosario Dawson kicks butt.

Well I'm a big sci-fi fan. I love the Star Wars trilogies, Jurrasic Park films, and Indiana Jones, but my favorite would have to be Serenity. It's an obscure little cult film that came out in 2005. It's by the creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel and the writer of Toy Story. It's a continuation of the Firefly tv series, a bit of a space-western-action-adventure-drama type film.

Completely agree 100% on both posts.

I am really sad to see how poorly it is doing in theatres. Do people have such short attention spans they will to not see a 3.5 hour movie?

Both films were great in there own way, Planet Terror was absolutely amazing because of all the wonderful homage to horror films of the 60's and 70's, and Death Proof was pretty much epic, non-stop Tarantino brilliace. It's more than just the second half of Grindhouse, it IS the 6th film from QT.

But you also have to blame the marketing. You really have to go research it or watch an interview to understand what the film is really about, many of my friends thought it was just about movie about a house where people go and get grinded up.

But hopefully it will be able to surpass is $50 mil budget through DVD sales, and we can look forward to a sequal.

Well, the good news is that Machete is a done deal from Rodriguez and QT's seriously thinking about releasing an extended Death Proof (so I heard...). Marketing was MOST DEFINITELY a factor. I started telling people about it months in advance (there was a lot of hype, and then blooop, gone), but people were like, "Um, a girl with a machine gun for a leg? Are you insane?"

Seriously, though. Stuff that I'm keeping my eye on. Charlie Kaufman's directing "Senecdoche, NY", a story about a guy trying to build a life-size model of New York in a warehouse for a play as his life falls apart. There's some fairy tale thing coming out over the summer people are hailing as the next Princess Bride, "Stardust", first movie Michelle Pfeiffer's done in ages. And a couple of other things I can't recall right now... But yeah, sequelling Grindhouse would be AMAZING, and it can definitely expect to make some money off DVD sales. A lot of people are kicking themselves.

Sounds cool, I've been listening to the Tribeca Film Festival podcasts and some of the entree this year sounds really amazing, with the audio alone. I hope most of the films get a wide spread release.

And by the way, I am quite sure that the 'extended cuts' of both films only include the 'missing reels', so for planet terror, that pretty much the entire 3rd act and for Death Proof, its the lap dance.

Still looking forward to 28 Weeks Later as well, I hope it was as nicely shot as the first one.

I can't believe there's someone else who's favorite movie is Back to the Future!! I thought I was the only one. You've proved me wrong, abg1988! Aside from that movie, I have a ton of favorites. I'm not afraid of black and white either. Alfred Hitchcock did some pretty impressive things back in the day. Check out Vertigo or Rear Window. Back to the Future may be a new classic, but some of the old classics are worth your time too.

I'm quite the fan of musicals adapted for movie viewing. Or just musicals in general. RENT and Chicago are on the top of my list. I loved Phantom of the Opera until I saw it on stage. :P

Pan's Labyrinth was spectacular, I must say. Too bad the whole bit with it being in Spanish detered some people from seeing it. :C I reccomend it anyway.

I love movies! Perhaps because I like acting.

I tend to go for historical fiction, a little sci fi (as long as it isnt too cheesey), occasional fantasy (think Lord of the Rings).

Some favs:

Gladiator
Glory
Lord of the Rings triology
Indiana Jones trilogy
The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe
What Dreams May Come (AWSOME movie)
National Treasure
Anything Monty Python of course

OH and Robin Hood: Men in Tights, well anything Mel Brooks I suppose.

Ok, I'm not a huge movie freak, but I LOVE The Producers... Guten tag hop hop...

I also like the third Pirates of the Caribbean... Even though it's SO freaking long. Although the story could have been better in places, I love the music. 9 times out of 10, if the music is good, I couldn't care less.

Also, I have tons of songs from soundtracks in my iTunes playlists... I had more soundtrack songs than I did any other kind for a while :p

Just saw Children of Men (Cuaron is a genius, and a wizard with continuous shots), but I really have to give additional props to What Dreams May Come. Elfstone brought it up a couple of posts back. It's just a brilliant movie, and definitely one of my (many) favorites.

And the only thing I didn't like about the SH movie is that Cybil (or whatever he name is spelled. :P) died. I felt sad. She was one of my favorite characters in the first SH game (never played any of the SH games, I watched their walkthroughs on youtube. haha.). I'm still watching SH:Origins. :3

I mostly like either action or comedy movies. Anything directed by Christopher Nolan is amazing, especially The Dark Knight. Hot Fuzz is one of my favorite comedies. And of course being gay and all, I get bored of the fact that every single movie ever released features only heterosexual relationships, so any film that breaks from that gets some considerable stock in my book. Most notably there's Milk and Brokeback Mountain but I think there's also a couple coming out this year.

As strider so listed, theres copious amounts of films that do feature non-hetero couples, however they are largely not A-list type movies... they're indie, as long as you can get over lower production values in some of the movies, they are great. The acting in most that ive seen is really good.

Blue Velvet is awesome. David Lynch makes some good shit. Voyeurism FTW!

I LOVE the movies American Beauty, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Pulp Fiction, Requiem For A Dream, Full Metal Jacket (vincent d'onofrio is sexy, but mostly when he got fatter and grew a beard), Saved!, Cruel Intentions, Hard Candy, BARFLY, Pink Floyd's The Wall, Reefer Madness (original 1930's version AND the movie musical), Donnie Darko, Hackers, Videodrome, Pink Flamingos (the whole John Waters trash trilogy was amazing), Blow, Dazed and Confused, Half-Baked (along with basically every other generic stoner flick, lol)...

There are many others, but I'm too lame to think of them right now.

I'm also quite fond of skate videos. Especially Black Label's Black Out and Baker3... too bad I can't skate anymore.
