Maybe he wasn't a mime, but a man stuck in a real box of glass. And because it was made of glass people couldn't see it, and thought he was miming.

Maybe he was just a mute trying to communicate about needing something and the idea of using nonexistant things stuck.

This just dawned on me, why does everyone hate mimes? Have you ever met one because they're not as bad as the ones on television.
