Used to own a Mac but too many of the programs I wanted to run were only available on PC. Reminds me of a joke comparing computers to cars: "If Macintoshes were cars, they would be much faster and more fuel efficent than any PC, but you could only drive them on 5% of the roads."

Macs are retarded and they piss me off. They're retarded-looking, they have no good games, and they're not backwards-compatable [ie. you can't run most system 9 programs on system 10; with a PC with windows or even linux, you can use programs from DOS/95/98/nt]
When I build my new computer, I'm going to have Linux with a Windows emulator. It's almost no use to do it now because I have so many files on this computer and it's old anyway - I'm going to start replacing it when I get some more money.

PC for me. I love the way Macs operate, and I think they're great operating systems. However, NOTHING runs on them, at least nothing I want. And I've grown up with Windows all my life, so I'm used to it and it's annoying little quirks.
According to some reports I've read, the new Windows operating system (Windows Vista) is kind of modeled after Macintosh in some ways. I don't know how though.

I've been using Vista RC1 now, for about a month, and the best way to describe it is as different. It's GUI is more like a MAC's in some respects, but still has some Windows standard features. I'm not sure whether I like it better than XP or not.

Ok, I thought I read it was kind of like a Mac. I figured it would still have the standard Windows features... start button, etc. Anyway, let me know what you think... if you like it better than XP. I'm thinking either way I'm going to wait for a while before I get it so I can upgrade my current computer and wait for them to work out some of the bugs.

I would wait about 6 months after the Initial release of Vista so any nasty initial bugs can be ironed out if there are any in the first edition. Vista is a very resource hungry OS and the full version with the new style 3D GUI Interface will need a decent graphics card (Integrated isnt good enough) with 128MB Video RAM or more to function.
Of course, if you run it in the older style modes then all you need is what you would have needed with previous Windows versions.

Mac's can run windows now, if you have one of the Intel ones, they released software called Bootcamp, lets you install Windows XP or Vista on a macintosh, it's not virtual it physically boots into a Windows partition.
Also whoever invented the pop-up baloons on windows XP should be shot!

I have a PC running XP. I'm too used to Windows to change but I know Linux is more efficient and I heard that MacOS is very good, I should try it sometime.
I won't upgrade to Vista because my pc would required an hardware upgrade and Vista already has some problems. Microsoft has planned the release of 2 service packs to correct known issues (not a very good sign !).

My laptop (otherwise a nice machine) came with Windows ME - totally nasty with Works instead of Word. I could receive a Word document, save it in Works, and then work with it. But if I sent somebody something I wrote in Works, and they had Word, they couldn't even open it. Then recently, my laptop got a nasty virus. My repair geek (quite cute, although scrawny) cleaned it out and installed XP. Nice, except that it takes a long time to start up my email, although after a few minutes it runs fast. But now, I can't open any of the saved docs I wrote in Works. Nutz. And I had even written few gainer fantasies that I had saved in there...
Gates got me, I guess, and I didn't even get to enjoy it!

Has anyone upgraded to Windows Vista yet? I've read and heard that it's supposed to be a big improvement over XP. It looks cool too.
I'm getting a new laptop in the next week, and (TADA) it's coming with Vista whether I want it or not. So, I was just wondering whether you guys liked it or not.
As for my prefered OS, it's Windows. I've worked with Macs before, but I CAN'T HANDLE IT!!! Yes, Windows is not that great, and Macs have advantages, blah blah blah blah.... I DON'T CARE!!! Those Mac advantages don't do me a damn bit of good if I can't use it.
I've been raised with Windows, and I seriously know just about everything about it. If I were to switch to a Mac, I wouldn't know how to do anything!!!! Life would suck.

OH SWEET! That's that "Flip 3D" thingy, isn't it?
Sadly, anything Microsoft comes out with is a big improvement over the last one. XP is TONS better than 98, etc.
Anyway, my sadness comes from the fact that I probably won't be upgrading my desktop... I need to upgrade my ram (I have 512 MB), get a DVD burner, and probably upgrade my video card too... good thing I'm getting a new laptop with it and everything I want.
Ok, I have a 128mb video card (nvidia) and I'm going to upgrade to 1.25 GB (1GB and 1 256MB) of ram... do you think it will run smoothly? Or should I upgrade the video card too?
Damn Microsoft for making such an awesome OS that requires so much!!!

It will be very slow with an older 128MB Video Card, though a newer or higher model one should be fine at 128MB. That RAM amount should be sufficient.

Use this little tool (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/windowsvista/buyorupgrade/upgradeadvisor.mspx).
I used it to determine if my pc could handle Vista, it also shows you which version would suit you/your pc best.

I've tried both, but I like PCs better, and my primary computer is one. I have to use a lot of macs at friends' houses or school, but I use my PC most often.
While Macs might have their bits and pieces to rub in the PCs face, they are only now realizing the use of being compatable.

Pavili, based on everything that I have heard, Vista is definatley not worth it. The new security features are a joke, it is basically a new gui. Not worth all that money, esp. if you have to upgrade your hardware to run it. If it comes free, then thats fine and all, but otherwise, not that great. Alot of the new features are not even taken advantage of by current hardware or applications. For example, the new directX. It has the possibilty to revolutionize PC gaming, but I belive there is like 1 graphics card that takes advantage of it, and not that many games are written with it in mind. At least, from my perspective, wait a few more months before buying it. You really don't need it if it ends up costing you more. Just take good care of your computer. I recomend Auslogic's Disk Defrag. Its free, and is probably one of your best tools in keeping your PC up to speed. Also, it is a must that you have spyware and anti-virus on any windows PC. I also recommend Firefox over the new Internet Explorer. Well, now everyone can argue everything I just said. Honestly, its eye-candy!

There will always be people that argue against it...
Of course not everything is written with Vista in mind, it's new. And XP is still the most common OS.
As Vista starts to take over more and more of the market, it will change. And games will be written with everything Vista means.
And if I'm not completely mistaken, I believe that the ATI Radeon XPress cards are the ones that take the most advantage of Vista...
And I haven't switched to Vista completely:p I have both XP and Vista on this pc, 250gb to each OS.
pavili255
20th February 2007, 02:48 AM
Well, either way, XP won't be supported for much longer. Microsoft stops support on it in a couple of years, I believe. Only security updates. SO, if my computer makes it that much longer (doubtful, the way it's been acting recently) then it's worth it.
About my video card, it's not that old... maybe a year, year 1/2. I think it does fine, but I've been considering upgrading it even before vista came out (it doesn't even have a fan and gets VERY hot).
No matter what, my next computer will be one that I build, if at all possible. That way, I get what I WANT, not what the manufacturer thinks I need.
Also, most of the things I need to upgrade are things that I have been looking at anyway... DVD burner (I record a lot of stuff with my DV cam), more memory (Video games sometimes run badly with only 512 MB), and
a new video card (my card will probably not run newer high end games anyway, and new cards are getting pretty cheep). No way will I upgrade it for a while... this will all be stuff that I do over the next 3-6 months.
Ok, on a seperate note, although software related and stuff... does anyone have Microsoft Office 2007? I downloaded the 60 day full trial, and I kind of like it, although it's way different, and I'm still getting used to it. Any comments on it? Thanks!

Office 07 is pretty nice, and I would switch to that before Vista. Really, I think MS is trying to get Vista to look to much like Mac's OS. I really don't think they'll convert many people over to Vista from Mac. I'm waiting at least 6 months before I upgrade, probably alot longer. I had the beta's and release candidates, installed on a seperate drive, and have ran them for testing. I just don't know how much of an improvement Vista is over XP other than the(sometimes annoying) increased security and the GUI.

Ok, this is probably the wrong forum to be asking this on, but I will anyway... My computer it being dumb. I have to hold the power button to get it to turn off. What can I do???
This is the kind of crap that makes me hate Windows. I've never seen this kind of problem on a Mac, although I'm sure it's not impossible. If anyone is knowledgable about this kind of problem, please help me! I really don't want to reinstall Windows again!

I first came accross a Mac only a few years ago, and it seemed widly alien to a hardened PC user. That's all my family has ever owned. And I couldn't seem to get past the "no right click" thing that the particular Mac seemed to possess. However, a friend's mother has one that indeed CAN right click, so I'm all good. I've heard Macs're good for art-related programs, so I may look into one someday.

That hasn't been around for quite a few years now, not since Early Releases of System 8 (c.1999-2000) have you only been able to use a one button mouse.
Today (with the exception of Macbooks), a two button mouse is standard fare.

Also, in a few weeks when I get the pre-burned copy of the new *ubuntu series (7.10) I'll dual-boot again. That's probably when I'll redo 2003 to XP. I won't wait for a bigger HD because that'll be a while.

I like Windows XP Professional.
I recently had to get my computer fixed. It needed a new motherboard, a CPU and a new CPU fan.
Then I had the Windows XP Professional re-installed. I'm going to get my own copy of Windows XP so I can re-install it myself if I ever have to.
Good thing I have two hard drives so I don't lose anything I had downloaded. Always a good idea to have an extra hard drive in your computer.

This may have been mentioned elsewhere in the thread but I've only skimmed through so may have missed it.
I noticed a few people mentioning that they'd like to switch to a Mac but found it too costly to do so - how about a Mac Mini? I've had one for just over a year and am extremely pleased with it, having been a PC user for most of my life. The Intel versions are about as upgradable as a laptop (though I think it's possible to upgrade the processor in the Mini) and it's by far the cheapest way to 'go' Mac, because you use your existing monitor, keyboard and mouse. Plus, they are seriously, seriously cool little machines because they are SO small. Many people who've seen mine have not initially believed that it's a computer.
So yeah, Macs: stable, very fast to boot and shut down, and all-round really nice to use.

(That's the Mac Mini under the monitor on the right, btw. And no, that's not MY picture. I just took it from the web.)

Haha, whoever that was who took that pic is using a mid 90s apple keyboard.. lol.
Anyways, rumors are that apple will discontinue it, or replace it with something radically different. IMO its a good portable unit, but not something to buy if you want something reasonably powerful, but if you want a cheap desktop machine you can buy and plug into your own stuff.
I basic iMac or Macbook isn't really that expensive IMO... nothing you can't save up for anyway. It didn't take me very long to save up for my top of the line 24" iMac.. and I only did that because I didn't want to get into debt and finance it and such.

Of course, it depends what you plan to use it for. I initially just wanted a desktop machine to browse the internet, write essays, watch movies etc but I have ended up using it professionally for stereo audio editing. It copes very well indeed with only 512MB - in fact I'm sure it would be good for multitrack audio too if upgraded to the full 2 GB. Way more usable than my old (but powerful) PC in the same context.

I've used Windows, Linux (Ubuntu) and Mac. Where I work we use all three platforms to do different things, so you have to be comfortable using them all.
At home, I used to be fine with Windows XP. It was very reliable, never had it crash, and it worked great. But then I upgraded to Windows Vista. Worst mistake I ever made. Things stopped working, drivers were missing for stupid things like my printer and digital camera, and the computer I spent a ton of money on that claimed to be "Vista ready" had stuff in it that was "no longer supported" by Vista.
After a whole month, I still couldn't get everything fixed. So I got frustrated, and when my tax refund came in last year, I bought a Mac, and I haven't looked back since. There's a bit of a learning curve, and you have to keep in mind that Macs do things a bit differently, but they do the job really well, and I haven't ever gotten frustrated with it like I did with Vista.
By the way, I still have the Vista machine, but after a full year of running Vista, it STILL doesn't work completely right. In the end, I think I'm done with Microsoft. Even if Apple went bust tomorrow, I'd probably switch over completely to Ubuntu, which s a nice, friendly linux OS (and the fact that it's free is nice, too).
Oh, those of you guys worried about Windows programs, you DO know that Macs can run Windows too, right? All you need is a Windows CD. You can either dual-boot, or for a bit extra you can get a program that lets you run Windows and Mac OS X simultaneously. The games I play (mainly WoW) run on Macs though, and all the programs I used (Office, Thunderbird, FireFox, Photoshop, etc) all run on Macs, so I haven't felt the need myself.

I'm currently waiting for my order of a laptop with Ubuntu pre-installed. Yay, no Windows tax!
Not having closely followed the prices of such things, I am surprised how cheap RAM is. I don't know if it's always been that cheap, but I suspect it probably has something to do with Windows Vista needing so much. Anyway, needless to say I ordered my nearly-four-but-not-quite-because-its-a-32-bit-machine-so-you-lose-some-of-it-but-I-don't-care-because-it-was-so-cheap gigabyte lion's share of the stuff. :D (I'm hoping it'll give a noticeable battery life advantage.)

This is one of those debates that will never be unanimous, people want different things from an operating system. Though it would solve a lot of issues if there were a standard system where all OS's are able to use the same installion files.

Uh.. You've been able to right click for years now.
The standard mouse even allows you to.
The zooming means something is holding down control while your zooming (its a feature).

I like PC, especially the new windows 7, (am beta testing), over Mac. We used Macs in school for English, and the stupid things would freeze all the time. Like, you'd try to use the 3d chess app, and it would freeze. Also, I like to be able to take my PC apart, and upgrade parts. Macs are all in one, you can't change things as easily, at least from what I've seen.

. Of course this meant all the slackers and pot-heads would just surf the net and play games, and then do the assignment on Friday (if at all).
Actually I write my best papers last minute usually, so don't judge them based on being more productive with their time (in terms of enjoyment).
When we went to the computer lab when i was in high school, the teacher has a master computer and can see whats on your screen and everybody's screen at all times, so really unless you know s/he isn't looking, then it was not a good idea to goof off.
-----------
On a separate note I prefer Windows, and Im an art student, so that's pretty rare. I don't like the fact that apple is currently the trendy thing to buy, and so you pay a hugely increased price because it is what is "in" right now.

I had a class, where we spent the whole year learning Microsoft office, and Adobe Indesign. We used computers everyday. In science class we used computers, but they were cheep old Ibooks that used to be used for teachers, until they got the new ibooks. They also had Apple 2s, and Commodore 64s, but they were for the advanced bio class (I didn't understand it either.).

They'd have ran specific educational software that the school uses that probably isn't available elsewhere I'd say.

Well, with Windows 7, I think Microsoft, will show the world what Vista could have been, and that Vista was the exception, that proves the rule, Windows beats Mac any day. Windows 7 beta, 1000% better than XP, with none of the problems of vista. Much faster booting up/shutting down than my XP was. Altogether, a vast improvement in the Windows family.

If Vista was the exception then what the hell was ME?
Well, that takes us to the "good, bad, better" rule. Windows 3.0 good, windows 95 so-so, windows 98 great, windows ME, bad, Windows XP Terrific, Windows Vista, horrible, therefore, if you follow the pattern, Windows 7 should be the best Windows version yet, and what comes to follow, will probably bankrupt Microsoft, and cause the deaths of thousands. So, yes, three exceptions, which do more than prove a rule, establish a pattern.
FatMike
14th March 2009, 09:22 AM
You definitely have that wrong.
Windows 95 was revolutionary like XP in the change of interface. Windows 98 was pretty much graphical enhancements and a little bit of modernisation (i.e USB Support).

It all depends on what I'm doing.
For everyday use, I prefer Windows. It's what I grew up on, and what I've always used. I'm currently using Windows 7 (the Release Candidate) and testing it out, but my fall back is Vista. (As a side note, I really like Win 7. Much more stable and polished than Vista, and fewer of those stupid pop ups asking if it's ok to do crap.)
For my server, I use Linux, Fedora 9. I've found it to be just about perfect for that. It's free, and relatively easy to set up (once you get the hang of it).
However, I have no room in my heart for Macs. They're overpriced, and I'm just not used to them. I can get a PC that does everything I need, completely customized for me, for MUCH less than a Mac.

Ok, I've gotta update my post in here...
Normally, I don't go for a new OS when it first comes out. However, with Windows 7, I made an exception. Seeing as how I'm a college student, I was able to get 7 for only $30, plus $13 for a backup DVD. So my laptop now runs Windows 7! YAY!!
Also, my server no longer runs Linux. I built a new server, and seeing as how I'm a bit of a Linux-tard, I couldn't make it work with the onboard graphics... I was just going to put up with it (I mean, come on... the server lives in a closet, and the monitor usually isn't turned on unless I'm working on it). Then I found out that, as a college student (yay), I'm able to download some programs from Microsoft for FREE!! Yeah, that's right, F-R-E-E! This included Windows Server 2008 R2 :)
So, here's the techno-graph of our home...
My laptop: Windows 7 Professional
My Server: Windows Server 2008 R2
My Mom's Work Laptop: Windows Vista Enterprise
My Mom's Old Work Laptop: Windows XP Professional
My Dad's Desktop: Windows XP (media center, I think...)
My Dad's Laptop: Windows Vista (home premium, I think...)
lol, looking at that, I just realized that none of our computers have an OS in common
Also, for those of you who are considering Windows 7, GO FOR IT!! Especially if you're currently running Vista. The improvement is astounding! I didn't think it would be that huge of a difference until I downloaded and installed the Release Candidate for 7. Once I did that, I knew I'd be getting 7, even if I had to pay full price :)
